The new Whitemud Equine Learning Centre will be a fully-accessible, multi-use complex with equine-related activities operating year round in the heart of Edmonton. The chart below compares the current facilities and those of the planned redevelopment.

Indoor Arena

Current Facility

70’ x 110’ indoor arena. No insulation or ventilation and inadequate heating. Poor lighting, does not meet code.

Spectator seating consists of 2 small benches.

Proposed Facility (Phase 1)

Two, separated 100’x300’ indoor arenas with proper heating, insulation and ventilation for year round use.

Fully accessible, integrated spectator viewing areas.


Stabling

Current Facility

Stabling for 60 horses with tack lockers. No heat or ventilation.

Proposed Facility (Phase 1)

Stabling for 60 horses – structure to include: stalls, lockers, staff lounge, feed rooms, wash racks, vet and farrier treatment area, tack rooms, blanket rooms, mechanical room, grooming and tacking stalls.


Office for WELCA and LBTRA

Current Facility

1500 sq. ft. ATCO trailer (circa 1960). LBTRA has one small windowless office.

Proposed Facility (Phase 1)

3000 sq. ft. – Fully accessible office space for both associations and public washrooms.


Meeting rooms and classrooms

Current Facility

1500 sq. ft. ATCO trailer (circa 1960) serves as multi-purpose space for clinics, school tours, volunteer groups, LBTRA programs, and storage.

Proposed Facility (Phase 1)

3000 sq. ft. – subdividable and fully accessible to accommodate groups of various sizes and needs including clinics, workshops, school tours, volunteer groups, etc. Located on 2nd level.


Kitchen facilities and public washrooms

Current Facility

No kitchen facilities or indoor washrooms. Site features cinder block washroom that does not meet Code requirements.

Proposed Facility (Phase 1)

Fully accessible indoor washrooms with change area. Kitchen facilities including running water, fridge and stove.

Keillor Log Cabin and Stone House

Current Facility

Original structures built in 1920s. Log Cabin is undergoing refurbishment with CFEP grant funds. The Stone House serves as residence for onsite security.

Proposed Facility (Phase 1)

Keillor Log Cabin will become archive and interpretive centre. Stone House will be maintained for onsite security.
