Redevelopment Project Feedback – January 2010

Work on the detailed business case for our redevelopment project continues to advance. The project is nearing the point of selecting a location on the current site for the building and its configuration. Concept alternatives were on display at the Equine Centre and the website from mid-December through early January. These concepts represented four generic building configurations in three general locations, or twelve possible alternatives. We received eighteen comment sheets and two emails with comments by mid-January. There was no consensus on the “best” alternative; however, many thoughtful suggestions were offered. There were several consistent themes in the comments:

  1. A concept and approach should be selected that does not require shutting down the existing riding arena and barn during redevelopment
  2. Visibility from Fox Drive is beneficial to promoting the new Centre
  3. Development should use as little paddock land as possible
  4. Concepts should enable better security and bio-security
  5. The redevelopment should accommodate a continuous bridle path.

The concepts will be evaluated against operational, functional, physical and fiscal criteria that have been developed with the Project Steering Committee. Many of the comments offered are included in the criteria and we continue adding to the criteria in order to incorporate the feedback and input. A concept will be selected for capital costing purposes and will be included in the detailed business case submission to the City of Edmonton. It is likely that all concepts will be reevaluated during the design stage once available funding has been identified for detailed studies and design.
